FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado Chill of the National Women's Basketball League (NWBL) announced today that forward Carrie Bacon has signed a one-year contract with the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA.
Bacon's contract is not guaranteed unless she makes the roster out of training camp, which begins in two weeks. She has signed a contract for the league minimum of $31,200.
"I am really excited for this opportunity and I am extremely focused on going out and earning a spot," stated Bacon. "This moves me one step closer to my dream of playing in the league, now I just have to go out and play."
Bacon, who played small and power forward with the Chill in 2005, averaged 13.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for a great player and person," exclaimed Chill Owner David King. "Carrie has done so much for our organization, both on and off the court, and I feel she can do the same on the next level."
In addition to playing with Colorado in 2004 and 2005, Bacon was also a member of Amicale Stesil in Luxembourg. During the 2004 campaign, Bacon average 29.6 points per contest and helped lead her team to the league playoffs.
Preseason play for the WNBA begins on Sunday, May 1, 2005 when the Minnesota Lynx visit the Connecticut Sun. San Antonio will open the preseason on Thursday, May 6 when they host Los Angeles. The ninth regular season for the league is scheduled for Saturday, May 21 with 10 of 13 teams in action.
The NWBL is a six-team league that features more than 25 active WNBA players. Other teams in the league include the Birmingham Power (Birmingham, Ala.); Dallas Fury (Dallas, Texas); Chicago Blaze (Naperville, Ill.); San Jose Spiders (San Jose, Calif.) and Lubbock Hawks (Lubbock, Texas).
