Sports Radio Network (WSRN), the official broadcast partner of The National Women's Basketball League (NWBL), will be home for the 2005 NWBL Championship, as the internet based station will be presenting action on both a taped delayed pay-per-view and pay-per-hear basis, beginning on Thursday, April 7, 2005.
This will mark the first time in the NWBL's four year history, that they will be presenting any post-season game with an option for fan's to watch the game over the internet.
"This is the next step for us," said Patrick Alexander, the President of the NWBL. Our league has been about taking advantage of the newest technologies to give our fans the ultimate experience, and this continued partnership with Sports Radio Network will give us that opportunity".
Fans will have the opportunity to purchase either a pay-per view package for $4.95 or a pay-per-hear package for $2.95. Coverage can be accessed via Sports Radio Network's official website at http://www.sportsradionet.com or the NWBL's website at http://www.triplecrownsports.com.
"This is very exciting," said play-by-play announcer and WSRN's CEO Rob Goldenberg. "Adding the video element to our product will no doubt enhance it, however, we also felt it was very important to give the fans the choice to either listen or watch the game, so that we can maximize our audience. As long as you have internet access, "Goldenberg stated," you can listen to the game.
With the option to either watch or listen, the NWBL and Sports Radio Network have made certain to give more options to its fan base without shutting the door on any of them.
As Goldenberg said, anyone can listen to the game as long as you have internet access, however in order to watch the game, a high speed internet connection, such as DSL or Cable is recommended.
Sports Radio Network's partnership with the NWBL began in 2002, with its exclusive live presentation of the 2002 league draft and the spring's NWBL Pro Cup Tournament, and continued in 2003 and again in 2004 with the leagues draft and Pro-Cup Tournament.
Last year, Sports Radio Network was once again home to the 2004 NWBL Draft and the station also webcasted the leagues first ever All-Star Game in Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Over the past three years of covering the NWBL coverage has reached a nationwide audience of fans, validating the rapidly growing appeal of women's professional sports.
"Sports Radio Network's coverage has become a fixture for the league," said NWBL Executive Officer Patrick Alexander. "We are excited to try the concept of a mixture between pay-per-view and
pay-per-hear for this year's playoffs. We know that there is a rabid following for NWBL basketball and are anxious to continue to provide fans the best in the way of coverage."
Sports Radio Network, a full service broadcasting outlet for amateur and professional sports, has already gained recognition as a leader in web-based sports programming.
WSRN burst on to the scene in the spring of 2001 with live and exclusive coverage of the United States Basketball League's (USBL) Long Island Surf franchise. Following its presentation of 13 regular season games, the station carried the summer's USBL post-season tournament.
Once again in 2002, WSRN was the exclusive home to the USBL Post-Season Festival, with fans in more than 15 countries; including Canada, Israel, Australia, France, Great Britain, Switzerland and Belgium listening to the webcasts. Not only did Sports Radio Network provide audio coverage of the post-season festival via the internet, and were used by Pegasys Video of Enid, Oklahoma for their highly-heralded television broadcasts. Recently clips of the tournament were aired on HBO's Real Sports.
As part of its exclusive coverage of the 2003 New York Collegiate Athletic Conference's women's and men's basketball championship games, Sports Radio Network partnered with T & D Sports Video Productions merging the technology of the internet with that of television presenting live audio coverage via the internet, as well as distributing the games throughout the tri-state area for a tape-delayed television presentation.
Sports Radio Network has continued its partnership with T & D Sports Video Productions over the last two years, presenting The High School Football Game of the Week for Cablevision of Long Island on a tape-delayed basis. All games were also web-casted live over the internet.
"I feel that there is a legitimate niche that we can fill. By utilizing the technology the internet offers teams can take advantage of a practically limitless audience," said Goldenberg.
Both the NWBL and Sports Radio Network see a bright future with their enhanced coverage of the 2005 playoffs this year.
