LOVELAND, Colo. – A night after San Jose upset the Colorado Chill in California, the Spiders almost pulled off another upset, but Colorado responded with a 77-65 victory.
The first half was a back and forth battle, as both teams shot less than 45% from the floor, but Colorado would eventually go into the locker room with a 3-point advantage.
San Jose’s intense and scrambling defense forced the Chill into 10 turnovers in the half, resulting in nine points for the Spiders. Amisha Carter provided a spark by scoring nine points on 4-of-6 shooting.
In the second half Colorado was much better offensively as they committed just three turnovers that resulted in six San Jose points. The Chill didn’t shoot the ball better in the second 20 minutes, but they made several big 3-point baskets and pulled-down 12 offensive rebounds. The Chill finished the night at .424 (25-59) from the floor, but made nine 3-point field goals to secure the win.
The biggest advantage of the night was on the free throw line where Colorado made 12 more and attempted 16 more free throws than San Jose.
Carter and Amanda Lassiter tried keeping San Jose in the second half as they scored 12 and 16 points respectively. Combined the two were 12-of-19 from the floor in the second half, but the rest of the team managed just to make three field goals combined in the final 20 minutes. For the game, Carter led the way for San Jose with 21 points.
Becky Hammon, who played a solid all-around game with 24 points and seven assists, led the Chill in scoring for the tenth time this season. Hammon scored 17 of her 24 points after intermission.
Former Colorado State All-American, Teresa Hinz, played her best game of the season on Sunday night by scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Hinz was making her first start of the season in place of Ruth Riley, who missed the game due to a prior commitment in Korea.
Carrie Bacon was the only other Chill player to score in double-figures as she finished with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
