Fort Collins, Colo. – After a nine-month absence
from the court, Colorado Chill shooting guard Becky Hammon will
make her season debut, as the Chill will host the Birmingham Power
in a critical National Women’s Basketball League (NWBL) contest
on Sunday afternoon.
The game against the Power is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. MST,
at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colo.
Hammon has been out of action since injuring her knee in a game
just before the WNBA All-Star Game. Hammon underwent successful
anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery to repair the injury,
and has been practicing with the Chill for the last two weeks.
“I have worked hard to this point
and the knee feels great. The New York Liberty has provided me
the best care and therapy to come back from this type of injury.” Hammon
said. “I am excited to get
back on the court and do what I love.”
Hammon is one of the brightest stars in
basketball today, helping to draw large crowds to Madison Square
Garden when she plays for the WNBA’s New York Liberty.
The same response is expected when the former Colorado State
star makes her appearance for the Chill. Before the official
announcement was made for Sunday’s game, more than 3,000
tickets have been issued.
“I am chomping at the bit to get out with my teammates and
contribute. It is time, both mentally and physically, this is something
I really need to do,” Hammon added.
“It is a dream come true to have her back. Many of our decisions
were based on Becky and her abilities on and off the court,” stated
Chill General Manager Dave King. “It will be exciting to
have her on the court, especially with a regular season title on
the line.”
Hammon is expected to see limited action
in Sunday’s contest,
as she will come off the bench. Team officials will evaluate her
game conditioning
and make future decisions based on her play. Hammon’s physical
health is the number one priority to us.
The Chill currently sits in first place in the NWBL with a record
of 13-6. With just two games remaining in the regular season, Colorado
will wrap-up a first round bye with a win on Sunday.
