HOUSTON, Texas – The Colorado Chill’s six-game winning
streak and hold on first place was lost on Saturday night, as the
Houston Stealth of the National Women’s Basketball League
(NWBL) defeated Colorado 66-62.
Colorado (12-6) lost just their second
game in the last 11 tries, but they have fallen to second place
in the NWBL. The two-time defending champion Stealth (11-5) have
moved back into the top spot in the league with just 10 days
remaining in the regular season. Houston’s league lead is
just two percentage points.
Houston used a large advantage from
the free-throw line in the game to help propel them to the four-point
win. The Stealth went to the line 30 times in the game, connecting
on 18 attempts, while the Chill finished the game 4-of-4 from
the line. Stealth forward Tina Thompson made 11 free throws on
16 attempts in the game. In the two games played in Houston this
season, the Stealth shot 60 free throws compared to only 11 for
the Chill.
Thompson finished the night with a game-high 31
points, including her 11 free throws made. NWBL All-Star Tamicha
Jackson was the only other player to reach double-figures for Houston,
as she finished with 12 points.
Post player Maren Walseth led
Colorado, as she ended the game with 20 points. Center Ruth Riley
pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for the Chill, in what may
be her final game of the season. Riley will join Team USA this
week and will miss the remainder of the regular season. Jenny
Roulier and Helen Darling were also in double-figures for the Chill
with 13 and 10 points respectively.
Colorado’s next game will be on Tuesday evening when the
Chicago Blaze will invade the Budweiser Events Center to take on
Colorado. The season series is tied 1-1 with both teams winning
at home. Tip-off for Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
MST.
