 Illinois Crowned Riviera Division Champions, Defeat Illinois State, 63-59Tournament Notes (pdf) Cancun, Mexico -- Tournament MVP DJ Richardson helped Illinois win the 2011 Cancun Challenge Riviera Division at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico. The Fighting Illini defeated the Redbirds of Illinois State, 63-59. Richardson finished with 13 points and senior guard Sam Maniscalco added a team-high 14. Maniscalco was named to the All-Tournament Team. Illinois moves to a perfect 5-0 on the season and joins past champions Vanderbilt (2008), Kentucky (2009), and Missouri (2010). Jackie Carmichael led Illinois State (3-2) with 17 points and Jon Ekey finished with 14. John Wilkins and Ekey were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Wilkins had an outstanding tournament with 7 boards and 10 points in the championship game. The game included three lead changes with the largest lead by Illinois in the 1st half at the 8:39 mark. Illinois State went on a 17-3 run to open the 2nd half and turned a 7-point deficit at halftime into a 7-point lead at the 16:12 mark.
